Experienced Music Teacher

My name is Jess and I am piano teacher based in Newcastle helping students from complete beginners upwards to develop their piano playing ability. My lessons blend the songs and styles of music that a student enjoys with tried and test technical exercises to help you develop the skills you need to play the piano with confidence.

I offer lessons in both classical and contemporary styles of playing, drawing on a wide range of well known songs and artists to enable you to learn to play the piano by learning the music that you enjoy listening to.

My background as a musician started from a young age, as I grew up in a family of professional musicians so from early on, my life was rich with music. From being put on the stage from very young, whilst my Dad and Mum sang at gigs, I had a strong feeling even then that my life would be dedicate to music and being on the stage.

By the age of 8 1/2 years old I was learning the lyrics to a Celine Dion song, with a clear aspiration to be a professional singer and aimed for the big stages.

I was fortunate to be scouted for the gifted and talented selection in my school days for my musical ability, enabling me to be noticed early on and helping me work towards singing competition and touring choirs during my teenage years.

This is where I first got my love for being on the road and touring both nationally and internationally. During my later teenage years, I was then successful in getting into the regional folk band ‘Folkestra’, based at the local music venue the Sage Gateshead, as one of the singers and as an instrumentalist. Acclaimed Folk musician Kathryn Tickell headed up the band and it was here that I really started to learn my stage craft as a singer and musician in my own right, often doing sold out gigs with band and going on a national tour.

“She made sure I was confident and comfortable in my lessons, as well as teaching me new techniques and skills. I loved my sessions with Jess and highly recommend her to any one”
Samantha Armstrong

I went on to do further work in the regional youth choir ‘Quay Voices’, touring internationally and being successful in getting on to a three country project. This resulted in an album from the band coming together from the UK, Sweden & Brittany and then finishing with a show, at the Sage Gateshead once more. Once finishing my school education, I wanted to further my music career by studying academically and took Music Production at one of the top conservatories in the UK, Leeds College of Music, with a speciality in songwriting and in studio production.

Developing my craft further as a performer, writer and producer, I then went on to work professionally with my father Roly Johnson in the duo ‘Jess & Roly Johnson’ and played shows and festivals, building a warm sound and a strong platform, which all the time helped prepare my for a solo career.

As a solo performer I have been able to perform across the UK and online around the world, opening for the likes of Alexandra Burke, playing at the Newcastle Arena’s 25th Birthday Celebration and recently featuring on TV web show ‘Nashville Meets World’, one of my next goal is to travel with my music to America.

Fast forward to 2021, the breadth of my experience with regards to teaching spans widely. After having completed a BA Honours degree in Music Production at Leeds college of Music, I went on to complete a Community Music traineeship at the Sage Gateshead and from there was able to become one of the project musicians teaching and leading across a wide range of classes and choirs within the music education centre and out in the community around Newcastle upon Tyne and the surrounding areas. To further my career, I then branched into a full-time business of my own teaching music privately and working within school and educational settings teaching music, taking many of my students through the ABRSM examinations.

On account of my experience in the studio, I have also been able to add an “extra string to my bow” working with students to develop studio technique and doing recording sessions and songwriting, which many of my students have enjoyed. Whether you would like to take a more formal route of exams and/ or to go down the professional route or whether it is just for fun, I make sure that each session is tailored for each individual and offers a 100% examination pass rate to date.
